BOND - BEHIND THE SCENES

INSIGHTS INTO THE FILMING WORK

Films are made while editing. So far so good. But taking a look behind the scenes, or rather behind the cameras, is also exciting. How can you actually imagine working on the set? A view of the 2019 James Bond filming in Matera, Italy. The action scenes are filmed from different angles with large cinema cameras attached to the vehicle. The faces are illuminated with large LED panels. Polarization filters, also known from photography, are screwed in front of the cameras, which absorb light reflections from the windshield and enable a clear view of the actors in the passenger compartment. Electricity is supplied by a converter in the trunk.

And because the actors concentrate on acting, there is a steel cage on the roof from which the car is controlled by a driver.

Via real-time image transmission to the cameras, the crew can see the recordings directly during the shoot and give instructions to the actors and drivers via radio. The vehicles must be equipped with a frame and a special running gear in accordance with the additional weight so that they do not tip over in the next bend. So no great driving comfort. Depending on how long the shooting takes, not a comfortable place to work for actors.

MANY CARS, ONE

WHY SO MANY ASTON MARTIN?

Imagine filming action scenes with a single car. At first the paint shines in the sun, in the end all that's left is a pile of sheet metal with bullet holes and theatrical blood on the steering committee. And now the director realizes that the opening scene of the film is useless because Bond had a kink in his tie that no one noticed. That is why there is the right car for every scene and, by the way, the matching suit in several versions, from ready-to-iron to bloody riddled.

In real shooting, it's even more complicated. There it is not the kink in the tie that decides, but highly complex turning processes and special requirements for the cars, which lead to the fact that several DB5s are made and used. Two weeks before Daniel Craig traveled to Italy to film the film, many action scenes were filmed without him.

THE YELLOW DOTS

THE TRACKING POINTS FOR EVEN MORE ACTION

In order to create even more bullet effects, there are yellow tracking points on the driver's door, which enable the vehicle to be tracked 3-dimensionally in post-production.

Explosions, smoke and bullet holes are then digitally inserted here. By the way, the system is known from Adobe After Effects and DaVinci Resolve Fusion and works on every car, not just on Bonds DB5.

A DANGEROUS JOB

DANIEL CRAIG INJURED

Daniel Craig was also injured while filming the 25th Bond. In Jamaica he slipped during a scene. Filming was interrupted. The Bond actor has also had no luck with previous Bond films. He knocked his teeth out while filming Casino Royale, and suffered a torn muscle in "Quantum of Solace".
